REACTIONS TO TRAUMATIC EVENTS, TRAGEDIES AND SIGNIFICANT TRANSITIONS
Are you a survivor and/or a witness to trauma? Some events that are life threatening can change one’s sense of safety in the world.
There may be times when we experience traumatic events, personal tragedies or significant transitions. Examples of these types of incidents are: injuries, illnesses, assaults, robberies, fires, transportation accidents, natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes), death of close friend(s) and/or loved one(s) due to unusual circumstances, and organizational (layoffs, relocations, etc) as well personal transitions (divorce, etc).
In recent years, a great deal of research has developed around the reactions that people have to these experiences. It has been found that surviving such an event or just witnessing the event may leave the individual with some very strong reactions. Some common reactions to these types of experiences are: physical, emotional and cognitive including sleep problems, feelings of helplessness, fear, guilt, numbness and
difficulty concentrating
Many of these reactions are not signs of a mental health disorder but common and understandable reactions to out of the ordinary events. For many people, these reactions may diminish over time. Having a support system and the ability to express one’s feelings is an important component of recovery.
With Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, the symptoms do not significantly decrease and one can experience and re-experience the threat to safety and intense responses of fear, horror and helplessness.
With PTSD, the traumatic event may be persistently re-experienced in intrusive and disturbing ways such as thoughts, images, frightening dreams, flashbacks. There may be persistent avoidance of activities, places and or feelings of detachment or numbness One may experience problems sleeping, eating, irritability, exaggerated startle responses all of which cause intense psychological distress.
Whether you are a survivor of childhood or domestic abuse, witnessed a horrific accident or a painful death, or felt the pain of a traumatic work events, you are not alone.
